You will help develop the Michigan Cyber Range and its associated research and education projects. As a member of Merit’s team, you will help develop, plan, and execute cyber exercises and various other cyber training initiatives as part of the Michigan Cyber Range’s education and training mission.
You will also coordinate activities with other groups in and outside of Merit. You will conduct a variety of programming tasks including program design, program coding, debugging, and documentation for software/systems and applications programs. Your assignments will generally be of a challenging technical nature. You will report to the Director of Cyber Range Development.

As the Cyber Security Software Developer, your key responsibilities include:
Approximately 80% of the Developer’s time & duties are needed to:
- Write reusable, testable, and efficient code.
- Create applications, tools, integrations, and educational content that enhance Merit’s cyber security service offerings as well as to increase operational efficiency within Merit. (E)
- Architect, orchestrate, and maintain virtual machine infrastructure for cyber security curriculum and services. (E)
- Provide creative content in the development of scenarios with storyline and attack/defense methods. (E)
- Assist in exercise development and execution: software development, user experience testing, and engagement during cyber range events. (E)
- Conduct a variety of complex programming tasks including program design, program coding, debugging and documentation for software/systems and application programs. (E)
- Build and network virtual machines in a laboratory environment. (E)
- Design, build, test and document various cyber centric and management applications and supporting back-end systems. (E)
Approximately 20% of the Developer’s time and duties are needed to:
- Participate in Cyber Range Red Team activities including conducting penetration tests to find vulnerabilities on customer assets including computer systems, networks, and applications with the goal being to evaluate and test detection and response capabilities.
- Participate in threat hunting by proactively searching, detecting, and isolating advanced threats that evade existing security solutions.
- Work in a purple team capacity by collaborating with customer Blue Teams, Red Teaming simulated attacks to evaluate their security posture, and recommending remediation strategies.
- Participate in emerging offensive security services and stay current on cutting edge security issues and Red Team tactics, techniques, and procedures.
- Participate in research activities for various ongoing projects, including the development of novel ideas and techniques.
- Work with University faculty, other faculty, Merit management and staff to identify promising areas of cyber security technology and applications.
- Teach classes and conduct workshops, table top exercises, seminars, and lectures for Merit staff and others on emerging cyber security technologies, techniques and applications.
- Support Cyber Range users in using security services.
